E-Learning

E-learning is a cutting-edge method for providing well-designed, learner-centered, interactive, and facilitated learning environments to anyone, anywhere, at any time. It does this by combining the benefits and resources of various digital technologies with other types of learning materials appropriate for the open and distributed learning environment (Khan and Ally, 2015). According to Tavangarian (2004), E-Learning is all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching which aim to affect the learning with reference to the learner's individual experience, practice, and knowledge. Information and communication systems, whether networked or not, serve as specific media for use in the learning process. Therefore “E-learning is basically the network-enabled transfer of skills and knowledge” (Gautam and Tiwari, 2016, p 14).

Components of E- Learning System

Components are interconnected elements of an E-learning process (Khan and Ally, 2015). There are five E-Learning Components that are vital for all successful online educational programs. The diagram below illustrates how these components are connected. Each E-Learning component plays a crucial part in creating an E-learning system (Gautam and Tiwari, 2016).

Audience

The student is a crucial component in the process of creating online courses, from concept to implementation. The student should be kept in mind throughout the whole planning and development process. Conducting a student analysis is one of the initial phases of the system design process. This analysis will assist in determining the fundamental layout of the other four e-learning components.

Course Structure

The term "course structure" describes how a course is set up for online learning. The extent a student learns the material depends heavily on the course arrangement.

Page Design

The learning process in an online course depends on the page design. The way a page is designed can have a significant impact on our student's learning process.

Content engagement

How a student engages with the course material is referred to as content engagement. Engagement with the content is essential since studies have shown that adding exercises or tasks to the learning process considerably improves the learning experience.

Usability

If an E-learning program is poorly functioning, it may not be warmly appreciated. Testing of e-learning programs and content is referred to as usability testing. Once an online learning program has been developed, it should always test in the same setting where the learner will finish the course.

E-Learning methods used in the Sri Lankan Banking sector

Moving with the global trend organizations in the Sri Lankan Banking sector also have implemented e-learning platforms and e-learning methods in their training and development strategies. Here are a few e-learning methods used in the Sri Lankan banking sector.

  •  Web E Learning  - E Learning platforms/Information Hubs/ Circular management systems
  • Virtual Classroom - Training programs conducted in Virtual Classrooms

  • Video Modules - training videos vested in intranets that have been made in advance for the reference of the employees.

  • Specialized eLearning – E Learning management systems

  1. Hi Shiran, Brahma (2017) mentioned that E-Learning is a very popular and significant subset in education technology because it offers an online learning and teaching platform for specific knowledge through the help of Internet technology all over the world.

    1. On the other hand, traditional or classroom learning environments have come under criticism for promoting passive learning, ignoring student individuality and requirements, and ignoring higher-order thinking skills like problem-solving and critical thinking (Banathy, 1994; Hannum & Briggs, 1982 cited in Appana, 2008).

  2. E-learning refers to learning experiences achieved via the use of information technology, and it focuses on the most comprehensive picture of learning that goes beyond traditional learning paradigms. It is also distinguished by self-directed, autonomous learning, which refers to the process by which learners methodically achieve learning objectives on their own. Learners can study course content independently using e-learning tools. They can also choose when to study, what to learn, and how much time to devote to self-education, as there are no time or space constraints (Chen and Kao, 2012).

  3. With the use of texts, videos, sounds, collaborative sharing, and interactive graphics, e-learning makes sure that all of the participants are actively participating in the learning process. It could improve the standard of instruction and learning. E-learning provides a globalized training and learning experience to participants (Islam, Beer and Slack, 2015).

  4. Hi Shiran, E-learning is a distance-learning using modern devices and information technologies, special software, and specially prepared teaching material. E-learning may be an individual teaching form or function as a complementation of the traditional forms of learning. Remote education enables the didactic process to appear, where its participants remain far from each other, and developed computer and telecommunication technologies, including the Internet, make the whole process possible (Janczyk, Sznirch, Wójtowicz, 2010, p.195).

    1. According to Jochems, Merrienboer and Koper (2004) "Integrated e-learning refers not only to Web-based learning but also to using the Web for learning in such a way that it is effectively embedded in a well-designed educational system with pedagogical".

  5. Hi Shiran,
Advanced e-learning systems have developed with multiple functions such as integrating instructional material like audio/video , email, live chat sessions, forums, quizzes and assignments. Using those systems, the learners will have flexibility for those who geographically dispersed and have conflicting schedules (Pituch and Lee, 2006).

  6. Thanks for your valuable comment Dulshan. According to Gautam and Tiwari (2016), Advantages of E-learning to organizations are,
    1. Reduced overall cost:-The elimination of costs associated with instructor's salaries, meeting room rentals, and
student travel, lodging, and meals are directly quantifiable. The reduction of time spent away from the job by
employees may be the most positive offshoot.
    2. Learning times reduced,
    3. Consistent delivery of content is possible with asynchronous, self-paced e-learning.
    4. Expert knowledge also available to all student and student can access any time. .
    5. Proof of completion and certification, essential elements of training initiatives, can be automated.

  7. Oye, Salleh and Iahad (2012) mentioned that E - learning is one of the most significant explosions driven by the digital revolution. As a result, users are able to successfully gain information and education using both synchronous and asynchronous approaches, enabling them to meet the need for quick acquisition of current knowledge in working situations.

  8. I totally agree with you Nimshi, In his book review on e-learning strategies for imparting knowledge in the digital age, Marc (2000) noted that one benefit of e-learning in education is its focus on the needs of individual students as a crucial element in the educational process rather than on the needs of instructors or educational institutions.
